Micromax topples Apple in Indian tablet market

New Delhi, Sep 1: Micromax has overtaken Apple and reached the second position in the tablet market in India in the second quarter with 14 percent market-share, data released by the International Data Corporation (IDC) said Monday. ”Strong performance in Q2 2014 allowed Micromax to tip Apple to the second spot,” an IDC statement here said.

Samsung with 19 percent market-share occupied the top position in the Indian tablet market. It was followed by Micromax (14 percent) and Apple (9 percent), the data showed.

According to IDC, the Indian tablet market has indicated early signs of recovery in the second quarter (April-June) of 2014 after taking a sharp hit in the past couple of quarters. Tablet shipments in India stood at 0.86 million (mn) units in Q2 2014, which is a quarter-on-quarter growth of 9 percent over first quarter (January-March) 2014.

“This recovery was fuelled by multiple factors. Business sentiments have shown improvement post elections and near term prospects are anticipated to remain better too. Further, traditional PC OEMs have started making big inroads in the tablet market and most of this success is led by leveraging their vast expanded reach through multiple distribution points,” Karan Thakkar, senior market analyst, IDC India said.

Android continued to be the most preferred operating system (OS). With 89.6 percent market share, Android is expected to sail above the 80 percent mark over the next few years. Windows OS is gaining ground too, it said.

“Improved discretionary spends by end-users and festive buying is expected to drive growth in the tablet market in the coming quarters. IDC anticipates this to be well supported by the optimism witnessed around enterprise IT spending in the recent past,” Kiran Kumar, research manager, client devices, IDC India said.

She gained a lot of popularity after the Black Hat Briefings conference in Las Vegas which was held in August 2006. Rutkowska here presented an attack against Vista kernel protection mechanism, and another technique dubbed as Blue Pill. Blue pill used hardware virtualization in order to turn a running OS into a virtual machine. Later she was mentioned amongst Five Hackers who put a Mark on 2006 by eWeek Magazine.

Rutkowska also gained some headlines when she sent an open advice to Microsoft's Vice President of Security Technology Unit to further tighten security on Windows Vista system. Each month, 65.5% of U.S. smartphone owners refrain from downloading any new apps, a report this week by Internet analytics firm ComScore said. That number is surprisingly low, but there are a few reasons that explain why it is.

“People only have so much storage space on their phones, so they really have to be selective about which apps they download,” said Adam Lella, a marketing insights analyst for ComScore, explaining that users only add apps that will truly benefit them
Another reason for lack of downloads is that smartphone owners tend to spend 42% of their usage time on their favorite app and 17% of their time on their second-ranked app, meaning they get most of the function they need from their top apps, Lella said.

Meanwhile, Quartz speculates that many users don't download apps because of how difficult it can be to find apps worth adding. In their app stores, Apple and Google list the top and most popular apps, but these lists are based on download numbers, not the quality of the apps, so it's tough to gauge how useful an app might be.

Good phone,Low price

The Oppo N1 mini was showed off at an event in New Delhi yesterday. The N1 mini is not only a smaller version of the Oppo N1 in just size, it cuts down on processing power as well. With a price tag of Rs. 26,990 Oppo is asking too much for too little of a phone. The N1 mini does come with the peculiar rotating 13 MP camera which takes good pictures and which could provide some great selfie

The screen has been shrunk to 5 inches with a 1280 x 720p resolution. The processor has also been downgraded from the 1.7 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor on the N1 to a 1.6 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor. The camera quality on the N1 mini has been slightly improved from the   original Oppo N1

                    

terms of design, the profile and the basics have been kept the same and the whole device now weighs 150gms. The Oppo N1 mini also supports the O-click accessory which lets you click pictures remotely. Besides that, the 2GB RAM and 16GB internal memory has been kept the same as on the N1. The battery has also shrunk, thanks to the smaller size of the phone, to one with a rating of 2140 mAh, which Oppo claims will last a day use

will be interesting to see how Oppo and its phones stack up against competing companies like Xiaomi who have upped the ante. All in all if you aren’t in a “how many processors would fit in my phone" race and are looking for robust build quality in a phone which might be the best one available for taking selfies, the Oppo N1 mini could be the phone for you. The company touts that the phone can take pictures in 24 MP ultra HD mode which we will surely check when we get the N1 mini for a full review.

OPPO -The Young mind creation

The Oppo N1 does impress us with its performance and innovative features, but unfortunately it is a bit too costly. Also, it is quite large to use as an everyday handset with its 5.9 inch display. If you love large sized devices and have the moolah to splurge, then the Oppo N1 will not disappoint you at all.

Oppo is another Chinese smartphone maker which has entered the Indian market in the hope to expand its business. The company launched its flagship smartphone the N1 which has quite an innovative design and sports some impressive hardware. It technically falls in the phablet category but surprisingly it comes with the Snapdragon 600 processor rather than the 800. And with a price tag of almost Rs. 40,000 it certainly seems an overpriced handset.

Before we begin our review, here is a quick look at the specifications of the Oppo N1.

Build and design

The Oppo N1 is all about design and we just loved it. It has an all plastic body and the design is actually well made which gives a premium feel. It is very huge and working with one hand just gets difficult. It has a large 5.9 inch display with a full HD resolution and viewing angles on the phablet are pretty decent. Colours do wash out a bit at certain angles but it isn’t a huge issue. The brightness levels were impressive as the display managed to visible even under harsh sunlight. Below the display are the three Android navigation capacitive buttons. Above the display are the earpiece and the light and proximity sensors inside the small rotatable portion which we will talk about later.

The right side has the power/lock key and also the volume control keys which are slightly in an awkward lowered position. The right side only has the microSIM slot which can be opened with an ejecting tool. The top is all empty leaving the speaker grill, the microUSB port and the 3.5mm headphones jack all fitting at the bottom. This actually wasn’t a good idea because if you hold the handset in landscape mode to watch videos or play games, your hand directly covers up the speaker. 

The back is all sealed and has the shiny Oppo logo under which is a small square section which is touch sensitive and lets you swipe into your menus, gallery and more. The feature is called O-Touch which can be activated or deactivated through the notification bar toggles.

So we come back to the top rotatable part of the phablet whose back part has the 13MP camera module with dual-LED flash and the front part, as we mentioned above, has the earpiece and the usual sensors. This small section can be rotated and you can use the same camera as a front camera to take selfies or just make video calls. It’s quite an innovative design that actually works well.

Overall we loved how Oppo has been very thorough with the design philosophy of the N1, although we were put off with the huge size of the handset.

The handset comes with a nice wireless shutter release remote called the O-click. The O-Click lets you remotely operate camera on the N1 using Bluetooth. And in case you misplace the N1 (which is highly unlikely due to its humungous size) you can use the O-Click to locate it, as it can trigger an alarm that will go off on the smartphone.

OS

There are two versions of Oppo N1, one that runs on Android 4.2.2 with a custom UI called Color OS and the other running on CyanogenMod. Oppo has currently launched the former one in India. The UI layer comes with a bunch of slick gestures, nice customizable themes, icons, widgets and live wallpapers. The layer makes the OS lag a bit, but we didn’t face any big issues on the overall performance.

 

   

 

   

The N1 comes with a very neat gesture feature which is activated by pulling down the notification bar from the left side. A large section is opened where you can draw your gestures to open apps or just control your music player. The gestures are customizable and we were quite impressed by how neatly this feature works.

Another gesture feature is the O-Touch which allows you to swipe and scroll through the menus, homescreens, settings and gallery by simply swiping your finger on the small touch sensitive section on the back. It is useful and reduces the effort to use two hands, but we noticed that keeping the feature on led to unwanted scrolling on the phablet as your hand constantly touches the touch sensitive area on the back.

Apart from the basic set of apps, Oppo has added a bunch of useful apps. For example there is a Guest Mode where you can lock your multimedia content and your contacts with a password in case you don’t want you other people to snoop into your device. There is also a Holiday mode which allows you to mute unwanted calls and messages.

The OS is pretty sturdy and apart from the slight hiccups here and there, the experience on the Oppo N1 was flawless.

Performance

The Oppo N1 doesn’t have the fastest processor and it is rather disappointing to see that the huge device is powered by a Snapdragon 600 which is clocked 1.7Ghz with four cores along with an Adreno 320 GPU and 2GB of RAM. Still it manages to churn out some amazing numbers in the benchmark tests and it reached scores almost as good as the Nexus 5 which has the Snapdragon 800 SoC.

Gaming was a joy on the N1 as the huge 5.9inch display gave us enough real estate to enjoy all kinds of games. We got hooked playing Asphalt 8 and loved the way it handled almost every high end game including Dead Trigger 2, FIFA 14 and Real Racing 3. Perfect device for gaming enthusiasts.

There is huge 3610mAh battery on the N1 and our battery tests revealed that after a full 100% charge, it can run a 1080p HD video for 11 hours straight. This is quite impressive as it beats a number of tablet devices in terms of battery life.

Camera and multimedia

Yes there is a 13MP camera with dual-LED flash and yes you can rotate it to take high-res selfies. But is the camera actually good? Well we weren’t awe-struck by its performance but it is one of best cameras on a smartphone that we have tested. The colours, contrast and sharpness are relatively decent and the camera manages to focus well although it isn’t very fast. There is a bit of shutter lag and honestly we expected a bit more out of a phablet worth Rs.40,000.

The rotating feature works very well and taking pictures of yourself has never been so easy. When you rotate the camera towards yourself, the mechanism doesn’t stop at 90 degrees, it rather goes slightly further down making a comfortable angle.

The camera can capture full HD videos at 1080p and the quality was quite impressive and even the recorded audio was crisp.

Conclusion

Oppo has made a really good effort with the N1. Apart from the huge design, we were very disappointed with the price tag it comes with. At Rs.40,000(may vary) you would expect the fastest processor and a stutter free OS, but sadly you don’t. The Google Nexus 5 gives you a much healthier spec sheet at a much lower price. For that matter, even the Sony Xperia Z1 is a better option with the waterproof feature which is an added novelty.

So there you go. Great performance, some innovative design and features but not so great price and a huge design. One would definitely have to be over the top to go for this deal.

Secure your android from theft

Google has rolled out a new update to its Android Device Manager service that allows you to put a password-protected lock screen on your lost phone and a big green dialer button on it saying “Please call me”. The new feature is being rolling out to both the Web interface and the official app for Android Device Manager.

Users can type in any message into their Android device manager when you’re remotely locking your lost phone, along with the number you would like the finder to call. The new feature works in addition to the built in security features in your Android device manager that let you lock, locate and wipe your mobile.

Once the phone number is added, the only action the finder can take is to either successfully enter the password, or press the big green dialer button to call the number you entered into Android Device Manager. Once they call you, you can set up a way for them to return it to you.

Google is planning to include an anti-theft kill-switch in its next version of Android OS. The internet giant has partnered with Samsung, HTC, Microsoft, and Apple to implement a kill switch feature in all devices by the middle of 2015. The kill-switch feature will be incorporated to reduce mobile thefts. The feature will probably not render the phone permanently unusable, but owners may be able to restore its functionality in case they recover the device.

New Os for Mobiles

Finnish smartphone company Jolla and e-commerce marketplace Snapdeal today announcedhip to lthe Jolla smartphone in India.

Jolla is a new Finnish smartphone running its independent operating system, Sailfish OS. Based on the heritage of Meego, an open source operating system formerly developed by Nokia among others.

The Jolla smartphone with its distinct button-less design, Sailfish OS gesture-based user experience, and Android application compatibility will be available in India exclusively on Snapdeal within a month, the company said in a statement.

“India is the rising smartphone market of the world and we look forward to welcoming many new Jolla fans across the country,: said Sami Pienimäki, co-founder and CMO of Jolla, which was founded in 2011.

Kunal Bahl, co-founder & CEO, Snapdeal, said: “Indian market offers few choices in terms of mobile operating systems. Jolla with its innovative Sailfish OS introduces an entirely new user experience to consumers and a unique smartphone experience both in terms of hardware and software.”

The Jolla smartphone was introduced in Finland in late-November 2013. Currently Jolla smartphones are available all over Europe, and soon in India.

Google plans to launch its first Android One phone in October

Google to launch the first affordable $100 Android One phone in October, plans to spend Rs 100 Crore on the program.

Google announced Android One platform at its Google I/O conference, under which the internet giant plans to bring affordable smartphones priced under $100 in emerging markets. Now according to reports Google is set to launch the first Android One smartphone in October this year in India.

Google aims to reach 5 billion people in emerging markets like India and Indonesia with its Android One devices. The handsets will be updated directly by Google similar to the Google Play editions and Nexus smartphones. The internet giant will also provide hardware and software reference points, while manufacturers will be able to put in their own apps in the devices.

Google mentioned that Micromax will be first Android One device priced at $100 and according to sources may be launched exclusively on Flipkart. Google added that the device will have a 4.5 inch display screen, expandable memory, dual sim capabilities and integrated FM Radio. Pichai stated at the Google I/O conference that Android One devices will come with Play Auto Installs, that tells users which apps are recommended for his smartphone.

According to reports, Google is teaming up with chipmaker MediaTek for its new Android One platform. DigiTimes states that the companies have been in talks for platform for the last six months. Google has also tied up with domestic handset makers Spice, Karbonn, Intex and Celkon to launch smartphones.

The internet giant is planning to invest Rs 100 Crore on marketing and advertising on the Android One program in India and plans to launch devices around the Diwali festival season. Google's Senior VP in charge of Android, Chrome and Apps, Sundar Pichai is expected to visit India for the Android One program and then further details would be available.

Cronic lock for android

Locking our phone with a 4 digit PIN, or with a pattern is a common way to keep our device secure but to be fair, it doesn’t take a lot of stealth to stand next to someone when they unlock their phone and guess what pattern or PIN they use. Smart Phone Lock is an Android app that locks your phone behind the same 4 digit PIN but it makes it much harder for anyone to guess what your PIN is because the app will change it every time. Obviously this sounds ridiculous because if the app is changing the PIN, how are you going to know what it is? Smart Phone Lock has two types of PINS that can be set; a Date PIN and a Time PIN. These PINs, as you can guess, change according to the current date and time. If you set a date PIN, it will change daily, and if you set a time PIN, it will change every minute. If you still think this isn’t secure, the app comes with two modifiers that change the value of the PIN making it all the harder to guess.

Before you read ahead, Smart Phone Lock supports ads and that means you will have an ad on your lock screen. When you activate it, you set a default PIN which is what you must enter before you can make any modifications to the app’s settings. The app also asks for your phone number in case you forget your PIN so that it can send it to you by SMS.

Select what type of PIN you want to set. Once you select the basic PIN, you can apply one or both the modifiers to it so that’s it’s harder for anyone to guess unless they know the modifying criteria. There are two modifiers, one is the Reverse PIN which will reverse the value of the PIN. For example, if you have set the Time PIN, and the current time is 8:15 then the PIN will be 0815. With the reverse modifier enabled, you will have to enter 5180 instead. The second modifier is the Offset PIN which uses a custom value that you enter. It must be between -60 and +60. The value is added to the current time and the resulting value is your current PIN. If you use both modifiers, the Offset value will be calculated and then the reverse rule will be applied to it. These rules apply to the Date PIN as well but the offset value increases or decreases the year.

 

The lock screen itself is quite simple and we don’t really like the ad but more so because there is no way to remove it. You can hide the app from your home screen from its settings.

 

As far as setting a dynamic and hard to guess PIN goes, I think it’s safe to say Smart Phone Lock does it well enough.

Launched alongside the Gear 2, this is a more compact smartwatch from Samsung, which takes some cues from Nike’s Fuelband. It runs on Tizen and has a Curved Super AMOLED display along with a 210 mAh battery.

While the Gear 2 allows you to take or make calls on your smartphone, the Gear 2 Neo doesn’t. Except that, this is the same as the Gear 2 smartwatch. It isn’t as pricy though.
